The Life in Transition Survey (LiTS) is a large-scale household survey conducted by the EBRD in collaboration with the World Bank in order to inform its operations.

The purpose of LiTS is to analyse and understand how transition has affected the lives of people in the EBRD regions, and what their views are on issues such as democracy, the role of the state, and prospects for the future. To date, four waves have been conducted, in 2006, 2010, 2016, and 2022/23. The most recent survey wave, LiTS IV, was carried out in 37 economies – 33 economies in the EBRD regions and four comparators.

The Life in Transition Surveys are large, representative surveys of around 1000-1500 households per country, with a harmonized questionnaire across countries and conducted face-to-face in each selected household. The surveys are also representative by level of urbanity (urban or rural areas) and follow some of the same localities over time.

For further details, you can download the technical report at www.ebrd.com/what-we-do/economic-research-and-data/data/lits.html

The Life in Transition Survey IV looked at inequality of opportunity, job quality (including access to benefits and stability), digitalisation (including use of digital technologies and digital skills) and attitudes towards the green transition.
